9 Waterfalls in 9 Days
Adventure with Purpose
9 Waterfalls in 9 Days
As another year of sobriety anniversary approached, I set out on a new challenge: "9 Waterfalls in 9 Days." This annual tradition is a testament to my journey of reflection, resilience, and renewal. This year's challenge was an unforgettable experience. While it may not have seemed as daunting as last year's 8 mountains in 8 days challenge, it still presented its own set of hurdles. Just four months prior, I thought my hiking adventures were over due to debilitating exhaustion caused by years of misdiagnosis. However, with determination and alternative medicine, I nursed my body back to health, ready to take on this new challenge. Balancing this endeavor with my responsibilities as a mother, student, and worker added another layer of complexity, but I'm pleased to say that my body held up well throughout the journey. Every year, I embark on these trails to celebrate my sobriety anniversary, a milestone that owes much to the healing power of nature. After battling addiction for 23 years, I made the choice to swap drinking sessions for time spent in nature, transforming my life and my family's. This year, I raised $535 for OVIS Community Services, an organization close to my heart. I didn't hit the goal but know the contribution will aid in their work in breaking the cycle of violence which resonates deeply with my own experiences of overcoming domestic abuse and addiction. During the challenge, I hiked to nine breathtaking waterfalls, driving over 2065km to and from all locations. These serene landscapes served as reminders of the progress I've made and the challenges I've overcome. As I celebrate my 9th year of sobriety, I look forward to the next chapter. Plans for a remarkable adventure to mark my 10th year are already underway: a multiday hiking adventure in Kalbarri's Murchison River Gorge. This journey, like my past adventures, will be an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for a chosen charity. I'm immensely grateful for the support and kindness shown to me throughout these nine days. To my extended family of supporters, thank you for being a constant source of strength and encouragement. You are the ones who keep me going, and for that, I am forever grateful.

Made even better by the fact that my teenage daughter decided to join me for the weekend, hiking each waterfall trail. Those moments become less as they get older so I definitely treasure them when they do happen. Mother-daughter adventures in nature are truly a thing of beauty. There is something magical about the bond shared between a mother and daughter as they venture out into the great outdoors. Whether it's hiking through lush forests, climbing majestic mountains, or simply sitting by a serene lake, these adventures create treasured memories that last a lifetime. The beauty lies not only in the stunning landscapes they encounter, but also in the laughter, conversations, and shared experiences that strengthen their relationship. In nature, they can truly embrace the wonders of the world, discovering hidden gems and marveling at the awe-inspiring beauty around them.
