Making a Difference – Clean Up Australia Event Success!
This past weekend, Down Under Discoveries proudly hosted a Clean Up Australia event, focusing on the breathtaking Mandurah Estuary.
It was a day of action, connection, and inspiration as families and community members united to make a tangible difference for the local environment.
Among the participants were young eco-champions Bella, Jack, and Emmilou, joined by their families and friends. Together, they tackled litter at Osprey Waters Reserve pathways and embarked on a 6 km paddle and walk around Channel and Boundary Islands.
Their dedication resulted in the removal of an astounding 18 kilos of rubbish, including 331 individual pieces, ensuring the waterways remain safe and pristine for both people and wildlife.
The day was filled with special moments, including:
Encounters with dolphins, pelicans, ospreys, and cormorants, sparking discussions about the impact of human activity on marine life.
A surprise visit from Dudley the Dolphin, creating a magical memory for the children and reinforcing the importance of protecting their natural habitat.
Reflective questions from the young participants, like, "If people appreciate our waters, why don't they look after them?"—a poignant reminder of the need for greater environmental stewardship.
This event also marked the start of Sea Week 2024, a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness and fostering appreciation for marine ecosystems.
Conversations throughout the day highlighted issues like discarded fishing lines and the critical need to protect marine life from entanglement.
"We’re incredibly proud of everyone who joined us, especially the young eco-warriors. Your enthusiasm and efforts have made a meaningful impact on the Mandurah Waterways. Together, we’ve taken a step toward creating a healthier, cleaner future for our environment."
