Exploring Accessibility and Inclusion: Mandurah’s All Abilities Paddle Launch
Friday morning saw the heart of Mandurah come alive as the community gathered at Riverside Gardens Foreshore to celebrate a momentous occasion—the launch of the All Abilities Paddle facility. This venture doesn't merely signify a local triumph but solidifies Mandurah's position as a state-wide trailblazer in promoting accessibility and inclusion.
The All Abilities Paddle Launch is not just a singular entity; it's intricately woven into a broader tapestry of paddling facilities that grace Mandurah's breathtaking waterways. What makes this launch truly exceptional is its distinction as one of the pioneering endeavors of its kind in the entire state, creating a platform where individuals of all abilities can revel in the splendor of Mandurah's unique water landscape.
Key to the realization of this ambitious project was the steadfast support from the State Government. David Templeman MLA, Lisa Munday MLA, and the state government played a pivotal role by contributing essential funding, making this initiative a reality. Acknowledgment is also due to the City of Mandurah and its dedicated council members, who worked tirelessly to bring forth this remarkable addition to Riverside Gardens Foreshore.
Expressing profound pride in the city's commitment to inclusivity, the council emphasized the pivotal role played by the waterways in defining Mandurah's identity. The All Abilities Paddle Launch is a testament to the city's dedication to ensuring that the joy of being out on the water is accessible to an even broader spectrum of the community, fostering connections and creating lasting memories. A special nod of appreciation goes out to the City's Access and Inclusion Advisory Group, local paddle groups, and the members of the community with disabilities. Their invaluable leadership, insightful advice, and tireless efforts were instrumental in turning a visionary concept into the tangible reality witnessed at the launch.
Adding an inspiring touch to the event was the presence of Mark Daniels, a passionate individual seeking selection for the 2024 Australian Paralympics team. His commitment to overcoming challenges and pursuing his dreams underscored the power of inclusivity in sports and recreational activities.
The All Abilities Launch site isn't just a stand-alone facility; it's a crucial part of the larger Peel-Harvey Estuary Paddle Trail Network. This network showcases the natural wonders of the Ramsar-listed Peel-Harvey Estuary, comprising 18 launch sites, including the newly inaugurated All Abilities Launch. Enthusiasts can now embark on a journey to explore over 10,000 square kilometers of interconnected waterways.
As a special contribution to the launch, we were delighted to provide kayaks for the 'Have a Go' component, inviting everyone to experience the sheer joy of paddling. It was great to see all abilities get out on the water and see the structure in action to support those in need.
This collaborative effort between the community, local government, and aspiring athletes paints a vibrant picture of Mandurah's dedication to creating a city where everyone can actively participate and relish the beauty that surrounds us.
The Peel-Harvey Estuary Paddle Trail Network isn't just a recreational haven; it stands as a testament to Mandurah's unwavering commitment to making outdoor activities accessible to everyone. As the paddles dip into the water, Mandurah sets sail on a transformative journey towards a more inclusive, vibrant, and united community.
